I have lots of information to put in this page so check back for updates.
What is a Mercury Truck?
A Mercury truck is basically an upscale Ford that has Mercury badging instead of Ford, this was also done for tax reasons to keep the government happy. From 48-68, Ford and Merc trucks were almost the same, the grills were a little different starting in 1957(?) and were phased out by 1968. Pre 1948 Merc trucks were a little different than the Fords but same running gear etc. The main difference is an "M" instead of an "F". Merc trucks did have a few nice features, like (48-50) a strip of stainless trim on the front fenders, a nice emblem on the front of the hood, and on the side of the hood, the Mercury emblems were at the center of the hood where as Ford had them at the front. There was also a MERCURY name plate where Ford had the FORD letters. Merc also had a longer stroke in the engine which made more power. The grill was close to the Ford but the park lights were in the fender instead of grill. There is a good write up about the Mercury truck at http://hometown.aol.com/mercpickup/badge.htm.
My 48-50 Ford says F-47 instead of F-1, don't tell me that those Canadians were up to things again.
Well as it turns out, the Canadian trucks were F-47, F-67.. all the way to F-155. Plain and simply, an F-47 is the same as an F-1, F-67 is an F-2 and so on. This was the same for the Merc trucks because they were also Canadian made. It works out that an F-47, which is a 3600lb truck that can carry an additional 1100lbs for a total of 4700lbs GVW, hence F-47.
I just bought a truck but it has no title OR I want to buy a truck but there is no title, what can I do?
If you go to an insurance agent, you can get a title using a "title bond." The bond is basically a policy based on the value of the car. It insures your title against the possible "real owner" showing up with the title. After 2 years (more or less depending on state), your title is secure against claims because the state now considers yours the only title. This method is usually cheaper than finding a title company because they have to do title searches.
